Valentine’s Day has been a holiday since the 14th century, and it is most commonly known as the holiday of romance. Some people love it, while other people don’t, but whether you like it or not people will still celebrate it every year.

“I love Valentine’s Day, give me all of the chocolate and teddy bears,” stated Kathleen Yetman, a student at Saint Leo and also a worker at The Abbey Tavern.

Giving someone candy and chocolates along with other sweet gifts on Valentine’s Day has always been a tradition within the American culture, and you can find red, pink and purple colored gifts along with cards in almost every store you go to before Valentine’s Day hits.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, the question always arises of how you are going to celebrate. Some people are single, so they choose to spend the day with friends while others may be in a relationship where they can opt to spend time with their significant other alone. There are many popular ways to spend your Valentine’s Day and many fun activities to do even if you are single.

Junior lacrosse player Delaney Chrisco stated, “I haven’t actually done this but supposedly people can go to Hooters and shred a picture of their ex to receive a free basket of wings.”

So, if you’re sulking over a rough breakup, head on over to Hooters so you can get something nice (like a free basket of wings) on a day that might not make you feel the best. Sophom*ore Amelia Vandyke also said that she likes to hang out with some of her single friends so that they can have fun on a day that isn’t exactly ideal for single people.

Even if you aren’t celebrating the holiday, you can still go out and find some good deals on food and activities on Valentine’s Day. For example, at Chili’s, you can get a meal for two at $25 which includes an appetizer, an entree and a choice of dessert. This cannot only be shared with a significant other but also a friend.

For those people that do have significant others, there are other, more popular ways to celebrate the holiday with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Leslie Ferguson, a senior here at Saint Leo said that her boyfriend, Charlie Kurtenbach, also a senior, will be “taking [her]out to [their]favorite sushi restaurant.”

Going out to dinner is a very popular way to spend Valentine’s Day if you’re in a relationship so if you haven’t gotten those reservations to your favorite dine-in place yet, make sure you call in soon!

Kaylah Walstad, a senior lacrosse player also shares how she plans to spend her Valentine’s Day.

“Me and my boyfriend will probably cook a nice dinner, and I’m going to get him a lot of chocolates! Maybe write him a cute letter as well,” Walstad said.

To those couples out there trying to save money, make dinner at your place and that way you will be in a much more private and comfortable space as well. Having an indoor picnic can also always make things a little more fun.

All in all, Valentine’s Day was always meant to be a holiday of romance, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be about spending some time with friends and being appreciative of having them. So have some fun this Valentine’s Day and do something enjoyable whether you’re in a relationship or not!
