Recipes with Sweet Potatoes

At my house, we are huge sweet potato fans! I love finding new ways to serve sweet potatoes over the holidays. Southern Sweet Potato Casserole is one of my favorites, but after giving this recipe a try, I’m torn between the two!

The combination of maple syrup and simple sweet potato seasoning in this dish is perfection. It’s that sweet and savory combination of flavors that makes this dish amazing! Yet, it’s so simple and easy to prepare.

Try making these maple-glazed sweet potatoes just once, and we guarantee you’ll want to make them for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Sunday Supper!

Sweet Potato Recipes

  • Sweet Potato Casserole: The best holiday sweet potato casserole. I make it every year!
  • Smashed Sweet Potatoes: This sweet potato recipe is delicious year-round. Try serving it with a burger instead of fries!
  • Roast Beef and Sweet Potatoes: When you want to serve dinner and a side of sweet potatoes cooked in one dish, this is a great choice.
  • Sweet Potato Risotto: Creamy and rich sweet potato risotto is a fall and winter favorite every year.
  • Candied Yams: Perfect for the holidays, these candied yams are filled with sweet flavor.
  • Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes: Just like your favorite baked sweet potato recipe, in the Instant Pot!

How to Season Sweet Potatoes

  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Garlic powder
  • Maple syrup

I like to use a mixture of sea salt, black pepper, and garlic powder as a seasoning tossed together with olive oil or avocado oil and maple syrup.

These flavors complement the naturally sweet flavor of sweet potatoes by adding a savory and pungent pop of flavor from garlic powder, and balancing it out with sea salt flakes and black pepper, whereas maple syrup emphasizes the sweetness.

Peeling Sweet Potatoes

Although we leave the skin on our sweet potatoes, you can easily peel yours if desired. This step is optional. I almost always skip it.

  1. Using a serrated or regular vegetable peeler, peel from the root to the bottom.
  2. Turn the potato in your hand to peel all the way around it until the skin is removed.

Cutting Sweet Potatoes

  1. Set your potatoes on a cutting board. You can peel them following the directions above, or leave the skin on.
  2. Using a sharp knife, cut off the ends and one side. Lay on the cut side so they are easier to chop.
  3. Slice into evenly one-inch chunks. You want them to be around the same size so they roast evenly.

If you want perfect roasted sweet potato cubes, start by cutting off the ends, then square them off by slicing off the sides. Cut into even strips, and then again in the opposite direction to cut them into cubes.

How to Cook a Sweet Potato

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Spray a sheet pan with cooking spray, then evenly spread your cubed sweet potatoes on the tray.

Sweet Potato Recipe Tips

  • Pick ones that are reddish-orange on the outside for sweet, creamy sweet potatoes. Make sure they are firm, without any soft spots.
  • Spread them out with plenty of room on the pan so they crisp up more evenly in the oven.
  • Do not boil your potatoes before roasting them.
  • This recipe also works great on sweet potato fries and sweet potato wedges.

Roasted Sweet Potato Recipes Variations

I like to have fun with the seasonings in this recipe. Here are some of the spices I have added and it makes for a delicious spice mix.

  • Paprika
  • Cumin
  • Chili Powder
  • Thyme
  • You can substitute honey or brown sugar for the maple syrup if you are in a pinch.

Sweet Potato Recipes FAQ

Do you have to peel sweet potatoes for roasting?

Peeling sweet potatoes is optional. We left the skin on our roasted sweet potatoes but if you prefer a softer texture, you can peel them.

Why are my roasted sweet potatoes soggy?

The main reason for soggy sweet potatoes is not giving them enough room on the baking seat. Make sure you have a baking sheet large enough so they are spaced out and not overlapping.

What to Serve with Sweet Potatoes

  • Sous Vide Salmon
  • Thanksgiving Turkey
  • Smoked Chicken
  • Sous Vide Beef Tenderloin
  • Easy Creamed Spinach
