Free Cable Crochet Bag Pattern with 3 Squares (2024)

This post includes affiliate links.

This Cable Crochet Bag features 3 squares made with 2 stranded cables in either rows or rounds as a granny square. This free crochet pattern is made with acrylic worsted-weight yarn.

Crochet Cables are much easier than they sound. You really only need to know how to crochet double crochet stitches (dc) and front and back post stitches using the dc stitches (fpdc and bpdc) as well as treble crochet (tr) stitches (fptr and bptr) with a twist.

This cable crochet bag is a great beginner project for someone who always wanted to try and learn cables as you will learn step by step how to crochet each of the 3 squares with the written pattern and video tutorials.

This pattern used to be a mystery crochet along and is broken up like that accordingly.

It’s time to get creative, so let’s get started!

Written Pattern Notes

Quick note: You’ll first crochet 2 of the “row” cable squares and then 1 of the cable granny square (optionally you can also crochet 3 of the granny square ones OR 4 of the granny squares for a pillow), and then you’ll sew them all together at the end.

Written Pattern:

Make sure to watch the video above before starting the written pattern as I explain cables very detailed. I ALSO added a tip to the video that explains how to get rid of the gap before and after the gap – the written instructions do NOT reflect that as it would make the written pattern too confusing. The mentioned tip is only for those who are ready for it or have tried cables before. Ignore the mentioned tip if you are just starting to learn cables. The written pattern is written such that each stitch has 1 stitch (no decreases).

Assembly of the Cable Bag

Now, let’s actually finish the project. You can finish it like me, or you can finish with some of the ideas below. You have a few different choices on how you can finish the project. Here are a few ideas:

  • make a bag the way I did 2 squares of Part 1, 1 square of Part 2
  • make a bag using 3 squares of part 2
  • a bag using any 2 squares
  • make a pillow using 4 squares of part 2 OR a combination of squares from part 1 and 2
  • or any other idea you can come up with – let your imagination go wild.

Please watch this video to see how I put it all together:

If you finish the bag the way I did, you need to make sure you’ll crochet 1 more from Part 1.

Now, fold each square in half. Put the granny square one on the bottom in front of you, then line up the folded other 2 square on the top left and right side of the folded granny square such that the post stitches and cables line up. Now use the mattress stitch to sew the squares together (video shows how to) such that the sewn line is all around the granny square.

Now add a handle (I added a ring on each side and added a leather strap). Optionally also add a closure.

I used the following materials to finish my bag:
